The position-holder will primarily be employed as a teaching staff member on permanent and pensionable terms, but will hold the Head of Department position as an additional responsibility on a three-year renewable contract. The Head of Department will be reporting to the Dean – School of Health Sciences.
- Overseeing all teaching and examination processes, ensuring timely and comprehensive course coverage and evaluation.
- Monitoring class attendance by students and staff.
- Working with the HR department to ensure optimal workload allocation.
- Managing students’ retention, eventual graduation and progression to other programmes.
- Participating in departmental research activities and output.
- Management of students’ projects, attachments and other industry exposure.
- Timely resolutions of students' and staff concerns.
- People management, including management of their performance, work attendance, leave, and discipline.
- Overseeing academic programmes development and review.
- Participating in approving all student admissions, receiving new students registered in the department, orienting and assisting them to settle down.
- Implementing policies that help ensure the sustainability of the department.
- Any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor or as captured in the detailed job description.
- PhD in Medical-Surgical Nursing/ General Nursing/Critical Care/Pediatric Nursing/Community Health/ Public Health or equivalent degree qualification in a relevant area from an accredited university.
- Master of Science in Medical-Surgical Nursing/ General Nursing/Critical Care/Pediatric Nursing/Community Health/ Public Health from an accredited university.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited university.
- At least three years of teaching/research experience at the University level, with at least one year of management experience.
- Evidence of publications, including refereed journal articles.
- A valid practising licence from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Attended and contributed at academic conferences, seminars and workshops.
